¶ A new plan
I’m instituting a rule where I must do thirty minutes of productive work before I can check my email. That’s not just thirty minutes before I can check it once, but any time. Without thirty minutes of work immediately preceding, I can’t launch my email program. If that only means once per day, so be it. But no more drive-by “I’m just going to check it real quick to make sure no students have sent me anything…”
To help me see how much this affects me, I’m going to just do a quickie post each time I discover a desire to check my email. Like right now. I just finished breakfast and really want to check, but I’m resisting, substituting instead some public-consumable writing. It’s like chewing gum instead of smoking. Except email isn’t tobacco and this blog isn’t very chewy.
