¶ Mormons vs Evangelicals: the political face-off!

A Mormon president? The LDS difference (The Christian Century magazine)

From Dave’s Mormon Inquiry I found out about this article on the possibility of Mitt in the White House. Apparently, the Church likes the article, too, and they posted it to their “newsroom.”

Here’s what I like, where the writer, Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp, a professor of religious history at UNC, points out the political differences between Mormon and Evangelical political belief:

And having a Mormon president certainly seems less dangerous than the perils represented by a born-again president who equates his decisions with God’s will. Because of their own history of persecution Mormons, by and large, are far more committed to the protection of individual rights and wary of governmental intervention than are conservative evangelicals.

I’m glad at that characterization. As of yet, I haven’t decided to vote for anyone because the election is still over a year away. I really, really, really wish we could get news about any “upcoming” election off the news until it was actually feasible to do something about it. I wish we could leave local primary elections to the local news. But that’s why I’ve given up news entirely myself, so I’m really not justified in my complaint. Still: whether or not I vote for Mitt won’t be based on his Mormonism. Like every election, I’ll need to see who the Dems put up and then choose the least-worst. There’s more than one Democrat who I’d choose over Mitt, and more than one I wouldn’t.
